About the organization

The Foundation is the legacy of Patrick McGovern (1937-2014), an enterprising business leader and tireless advocate for science. McGovern was the founder of International Data Group (IDG), a global research, investment, and publishing company that chronicled the rise of digital technology and made it intelligible to millions.

The Foundation strives to advance the development and application of data science and AI to create a thriving, equitable, and sustainable future for all. As a leading funder in this area, we are committed to shaping an ecosystem around principles of ethical design, inclusive and equitable representation, structured accountability, and socially responsible decision making. Our work engages academia, civil society, and technologists as we practice strategic philanthropy, systems change grantmaking, and convene a broad network of thought leaders.

About the position

We are looking for an assistant with a high level of drive, curiosity, and passion to grow and learn. This role is well-suited to individuals with 2-3 years of experience who are interested in our work and our field, as an opportunity to learn our space and learn to handle complex workflows. Reporting to the Chief of Staff, this job will be a strong learning and development experience with a significant amount of responsibility.

Things you’ll do:

  1. Prioritize and lead multiple projects at a time
  2. Facilitate meetings by aiding in preparation, taking notes, and coordinating follow-up
  3. Track ongoing workstreams and help to ensure follow-through on ongoing projects
  4. Develop processes and structures to support recurring meetings and rhythms of the organization
  5. Coordinate and schedule internal and external meetings and manage the president’s calendar to make sure that his time is used optimally
  6. Own special projects as needed
  7. Build our culture: on our small (but growing) team, every member is an important part of building the systems, processes, and culture of a thriving workplace

No particular type of experience is a prerequisite, as the right candidate will be someone who can quickly learn to do things they’ve never done before – we’re interested in meeting candidates from a range of backgrounds. As with all our roles, we are deeply committed to fostering inclusion, diversity, equity, and access, and welcome candidates of all identities to apply.

Key Attributes

  • You’re deeply committed to social impact. You hope to make a career building systems that deliver socially beneficial outcomes, and are motivated by helping others
  • You’re action-oriented. You enjoy working systematically, checking things off your list, and figuring out knotty problems. You love coming up with creative solutions just as much as the tactical work of implementing them
  • You are intentional. Your working style is about creating order and planning ahead. You think systematically and establish elegant processes
  • You are highly empathetic. You enjoy helping others and love being part of a team.
  • You are a skilled communicator. You’re both a great listener and an effective speaker and writer. You build new relationships easily and enjoy engaging with people
  • You are passionate about learning. You seek out direct feedback and love to invest in your personal development. You’re intellectually curious about technology, philanthropy, and what makes great organizations tick
  • You are detail-oriented and have excellent organizational skills. Typos make you cringe, and you are quick to spot formatting and grammatical errors. You like creating structure in your work
