About the organization

The Foundation is the legacy of Patrick McGovern (1937-2014), an enterprising business leader and tireless advocate for science. McGovern was the founder of International Data Group (IDG), a global research, investment, and publishing company that chronicled the rise of digital technology and made it intelligible to millions.

The Foundation strives to advance the development and application of data science and AI to create a thriving, equitable, and sustainable future for all. As a leading funder in this area, we are committed to shaping an ecosystem around principles of ethical design, inclusive and equitable representation, structured accountability, and socially responsible decision making. Our work engages academia, civil society, and technologists as we practice strategic philanthropy, systems change grantmaking, and convene a broad network of thought leaders.

About the position

We are looking for a flexible, entrepreneurial people leader that brings a strong generalist toolkit and a “roll up the sleeves” mentality to their work, who can build our people function and our team. We’ve laid the groundwork of people operations and are planning to grow the team significantly this year. As we look ahead to 2021, we’re focused on both building our capabilities and on creating a vibrant organizational culture through making a number of key hires and developing core talent development practices.

Things you’ll do:

  1. Take our people and talent function to the next level. From a solid foundation, we are ready to start building out the essential building blocks of our people and talent function: learning and development, performance management, career pathways, an amazing onboarding experience, and a great recruiting machine
  2. Build our recruiting engine and driving key hires. The right candidate will be comfortable building and operating our recruiting function, a stellar and unbiased sourcer and interviewer, and an astute judge of talent that can guide us on key hires
  3. Build culture through onboarding and key talent practices. As we bring on new team members, you’ll iteratively build an onboarding process that creates a great employee experience and builds shared knowledge and values on our team. At the same time, you’ll build talent practices, experiences, and habits that will ensure that this culture is broadly shared on our whole team, and that will keep us united and connected as we grow
  4. Foster learning and development. You’ll create our learning and development system from the ground up, focused both on developing the team’s level of field knowledge as well as developing the skills and capabilities of each individual member of the team.
  5. Develop essential HR programs. You’ll lead the development of our performance management practice and help ensure a high-quality review process, build HR benefits and information systems, continue to refine our policies, work with managers to ensure strong team functioning, and develop other programs in response to the emerging needs of the team

We are looking for candidates with 5+ years of experience leading a people function in a fast-paced, high growth environment, and a career history that reflects a generalist orientation. The right candidate will both be highly flexible and have extremely strong judgement and discretion. As with all our roles, we are committed to fostering inclusion, diversity, equity, and access, and welcome candidates of all identities to apply.

Key Attributes

  • You’re both an expert and a builder. You’re deeply knowledgeable about the “full stack” of people leadership skills, and you thrive in a startup environment where you get to leverage all those skills on a daily basis and put your stamp on new systems and practices.
  • You are both pragmatic and empathetic, and can lean into either side to provide excellent coaching and advice at all levels of an organization
  • You’re a collaborative problem solver – you’re creative and present your ideas effectively, but you take feedback and are eager to work collaboratively to get things done
  • You build cultures that are animated by purpose and ideas, and are skilled at bringing teams together around common mission, purpose, and values
  • You’re deeply committed to social impact. You are inspired by working in an organization committed to social good, and are motivated by helping others, and you’re passionate about technology and the power it has to accelerate societal progress
