About the organization

The Foundation is the legacy of Patrick McGovern (1937-2014), an enterprising business leader and tireless advocate for science. McGovern was the founder of International Data Group (IDG), a global research, investment, and publishing company that chronicled the rise of digital technology and made it intelligible to millions.

The Foundation strives to advance the development and application of data science and AI to create a thriving, equitable, and sustainable future for all. As a leading funder in this area, we are committed to shaping an ecosystem around principles of ethical design, inclusive and equitable representation, structured accountability, and socially responsible decision making. Our work engages academia, civil society, and technologists as we practice strategic philanthropy, systems change grantmaking, and convene a broad network of thought leaders.

About the position

The Program Associate will staff our program team and help translate strategy into reality in support of the Foundation’s goals. This work will include researching and performing due diligence on potential grantees, providing support to the program team on strategy development, and helping to identify high-leverage opportunities at the intersection of data science and social good. The successful candidate will have strong analytical and writing skills, great attention to detail, and the ability to juggle multiple project and competing priorities.

Things you’ll do:

  1. Support the development of grant strategies. Research and analyze strategies at the intersection of data science and social good – across domains ranging from global digital health to climate change – to help develop an institutional perspective and identify the highest-leverage opportunities
  2. Build deep understanding of the spaces we work in and help to develop an open and inclusive pipeline of grantees
  3. Steward strategy into action. Take strategic priorities developed by Board and strategy team and identify rubrics for grantmaking, key actors, and identify possible grantees
  4. Diligence grantee candidates. Research and perform strategic, financial, and legal due diligence on potential grantees to ensure that they meet our strategic criteria and compliance guidelines
  5. Draft and prepare written materials to inform internal decision making, make grant recommendations, and to share externally when called for
  6. Building our culture. On our small (and growing) team, every member is an important part of building our systems, processes, and culture

We are looking for candidates with 2-3 years of analytical work experience. Candidates who have previously worked in management consulting or paralegal roles might be a great fit. Most important is a passion for technology and society, and a strong drive to learn.

Key Attributes

  • You’re deeply committed to social impact. You hope to make a career focused on delivering socially beneficial outcomes, and are motivated by helping others
  • You’re analytical and methodical in your work. You like breaking tasks down into their component parts and thinking deeply about the best way to solve problems, and you’re quantitatively strong
  • You’re passionate about technology and the power it has to accelerate societal progress
  • You’re animated by ideas and derive a sense of purpose from working toward a common goal with a team
  • You are detail-oriented and have excellent writing and organizational skills
  • You are intentional. Your working style is about creating order and planning ahead. You think systematically and establish elegant processes
  • You are highly empathetic. You enjoy helping others and love being part of a team
  • You are passionate about learning. You seek out direct feedback and love to invest in your personal development. You’re intellectually curious about technology, philanthropy, and what makes great organizations tick
