About the organization

The Foundation is the legacy of Patrick McGovern (1937-2014), an enterprising business leader and tireless advocate for science. McGovern was the founder of International Data Group (IDG), a global research, investment, and publishing company that chronicled the rise of digital technology and made it intelligible to millions.

The Foundation strives to advance the development and application of data science and AI to create a thriving, equitable, and sustainable future for all. As a leading funder in this area, we are committed to shaping an ecosystem around principles of ethical design, inclusive and equitable representation, structured accountability, and socially responsible decision making. Our work engages academia, civil society, and technologists as we practice strategic philanthropy, systems change grantmaking, and convene a broad network of thought leaders.

About the position

Since day one, the Foundation has supported innovative work at the intersection of technology and society. Our work has spanned a range of fields, with particular focus on digital health, data institutions and governance, climate change, and increasing diversity, equity, inclusion, and access in the technology field.

We are looking for strategists with depth in one or more of these fields that can help us continue to refine our grantmaking approach. This role will help to develop strategy in the program areas we work in, source and manage relationships with grantees, and contribute to the Foundation’s work in convening and developing thought leadership in the field.

Things you’ll do:

  1. Work closely with Foundation leadership to develop and lead a clear strategy in one or more program areas
  2. In collaboration with other Foundation staff, develop and manage a cohesive portfolio of grants and investments that will foster the development of the field
  3. Develop and manage relationships with key partners, including collaborators, advisors, and academia, with the goal of advancing our programmatic work, building our understanding of the space, and identifying areas of highest need
  4. Conduct deep research and learning to synthesize the state of the field and to understand the implications or downstream effects of our potential strategic choices
  5. Collaborate regularly with grantees, engage in joint learning, and evaluate lessons learned across grant

We are looking for candidates that like to solve problems and build strategies both through a data-driven approach and through deep collaboration with a team. We hope to find a strategist who is deeply empathetic and deeply practical, who can recognize the real needs of our grantees and our intended beneficiaries and develop innovative ways to meet them. Our ideal candidate combines expertise with a “beginner’s mind,” and enjoys intellectual collaboration and dialogue.

The right candidate will bring a relevant academic background as well as significant experience in digital health, data governance, AI ethics, climate change, or other intersections of technology and social good. Candidates with management consulting or technology experience who have depth in these areas are encouraged to apply.  As with all our roles, we are deeply committed to fostering inclusion, diversity, equity, and access, and welcome candidates of all identities.
